The State Avenue construction project will reach a pivotal milestone on Monday, August 17, when the contractor begins final paving starting at 7 p.m.

The work will continue the following Tuesday through Friday, Aug. 18-21, during daytime hours. Significant traffic interruption is not anticipated, but some businesses in the corridor between 136th and 152nd Street NE may be inaccessible for limited periods during the overlay process.

The $12 million improvement project, which includes widening the mile-long stretch to five lanes, upgrading the traffic signal at 136th Street NE and adding a new signal at 152nd Street NE, also funds the addition of streetscape elements, planted medians and sidewalk buffers, and decorative signal poles and street lights.

"Our key goals are to expand roadway capacity and improve safety for both motorists and pedestrians, who will benefit from the new sidewalks and crossing signals," said public works director Kevin Nielsen. "When the work is done, the streetscape design elements we're adding will be a welcome and attractive addition to this stretch of State Avenue."

The eventual goal is to provide five lanes of roadway on the popular thoroughfare, also called Smokey Point Boulevard or Old Hwy. 99, from 116th Street to 172nd in Smokey Point. The road, a major north-south route used by more than 22,000 vehicles a day, also serves as the main access for future development within the Smokey Point Master Plan.

In conjunction with the road work, the city is also upgrading aging water mains and installing new trunk sewer lines to meet future growth needs.
