Children walking to the Arlington Boys and Girls Club will soon have a safer, well-lighted path.
Arlington's public works director, Jim Kelly, presented the city's plan for a trail on 188th Street at the August 3 council meeting. The path will be 2,500 feet of asphalt that will link with the Centennial Trail on 167th Street.
"There is no place for kids to walk out there," Kelly said, explaining the importance of the new trail. "Now they will have a safe place to walk down to the park and have better access to the Boys and Girls Club."
The $125,000 project is funded by the ARRA federal stimulus program and will break ground at the end of August.
At the same time, the PUD will be reducing power lines along the street and adding streetlights, making it safer for pedestrians. City crews will also be resurfacing the two lanes on 188th Street.
By constructing all of the projects at once, the City can stage the development so long-term impact in the area is minimal. The project is expected to be completed by the end of September.
