Yes, it's still the middle of summer, but campaign signs are already sprouting alongside roads throughout the county. Several city and county council seats are up for election along with school board positions in both Marysville and Arlington.

As the fall approaches, voters will have opportunities to hear more about candidates at several community forums. Chambers of Commerce for both Marysville and Arlington plan "meet the candidate" events.

County Councilman John Koster (R) will be challenged by Ellen Hiatt Watson (D).

One of the more high-profile campaigns in the coming election season is likely to be the race for Snohomish County Council District 1. Incumbent John Koster (R) is facing Ellen Hiatt Watson (D), a political newcomer who has proved a formidable opponent of rural development.

Koster is a former dairyman and three-term state legislator who has served on the Snohomish County Council since 2001. Watson, a communications and marketing consultant, founded the non-profit organization 7-Lakes, which works to help preserve rural lands, and she's been appointed as a citizen member on Snohomish County Tomorrow's Steering Committee.

Four seats are up for election on the Arlington City Council. Three candidates have filed for position 3, incumbent Scott Solla and challengers Brock Hecla and Kari Ilonummi. For the at-large position, former Arlington superintendent Linda Byrnes hopes to unseat Graham Smith. The other two seats, currently occupied by Steve Baker and Chris Raezer, are unopposed.

Two Marysville City Council positions are also contested. Incumbent Donna Wright will face off against Quinn King for position 2, and Patrick Larson Jr. will challenge position 3's councilmember Jeff Seibert. Incumbents Jeffrey Vaughan and Jon Nehring are unopposed for positions 1 and 4, respectively.

For local school boards, Arlington has two seats up for election, but only one is contested. Ursula Ghirardo is unopposed in district 3, while incumbent Bob McClure and Jim Oday have both filed for the district 5 position.

Marysville's district 1 has a three-way school board race between Mark Hatch, Heather Thweatt and Chris Nation. Michael Kundu is unopposed for district 4.

Two seats will be filled for Lakewood's school board, but directors currently serving are running without opposition. Oscar Escalante and Ken Christiansen have filed for re-election in positions 1 and 3 respectively.
