More than 9,500 households in Marysville are already seeing higher rates for solid waste collection services, following the approval of a June 22 resolution by the Marysville City Council.

Effective July 1, 2009, the city began incremental increases amounting to 9 percent over the span of four years. Utility managers expect the higher rates will help the city cover the costs incurred with curbside pickup service.

Low-income seniors will see a $2.06 increase for a standard 36-gallon can, serviced weekly, and rates for non-exempt households will increase by $3.26. Optional yard debris containers will increase from $15.00 to $16.36 on consumers' bimonthly bill. Commercial customers with a 1-yard container can expect a $14.68 bimonthly increase.

Although the city hopes to maintain service without additional rate adjustments, the new rates are considered an initial increase.
