The City of Arlington held an official groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of the Arlington Airport's office on Saturday, May 9.
The $1.2 million expansion of the airport office will add 7,400 square feet to the existing 1,400 square foot building, in part to accommodate the state Department of Transportation Aviation Division offices, which are being relocated from a nearby retail area. The larger space will also feature a new community meeting room, a pilots' lounge, and a viewing deck that will give airport employees a better view of the airfield during emergencies.
The Arlington City Council awarded the $1.2 million construction contract to Pennon Construction of Seattle following the city's competitive bidding process. Construction is expected to get underway by the end of May and be completed by late October.
The airport office groundbreaking coincided with the annual Airport Appreciation Day, which took place Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the airport with face painting, aviation displays, and even free flights through the Young Eagles program for children ages 7 to 18.
