This spring, Snohomish County Public Utility District will initiate a countywide project to design a new 177-mile fiber optic system.

"The network will support and enhance communications and data transfer needs as part of our daily operations," said Dean Saksena, senior manager of Planning, Engineering and Technical Services. "It will also position the utility as it makes the transition to 'smart grid' technology in the future."

The fiber optic system will connect to 62 substations, two radio sites and various PUD buildings. The utility expects to complete the design phase in 2009, with fiber optic installation and testing scheduled in 2010.

The PUD will be working with several consultants during the design phase to check existing poles and infrastructure, some of which is on private property. The utility and its consultants will make every attempt to notify affected property owners before they begin work.

The consultants working on the project include D. Hittle & Associates, HDR Engineering Inc., Commonwealth Associates, Inc., Power Engineers and Butsko Utility Design.

Residents with questions or concerns about the project should call PUD Customer Service at 425-783-1000.
