Susan Robinson, manager of civil contracts for Waste Management Northwest, addressed the January 26 Marysville City Council meeting to talk about the impact of emergency situations on recycling and garbage pickup. December's winter storms were a good lesson for the company on customer service, their response to weather conditions, and how they can do better.

Robinson stressed that Waste Management's primary goal is to keep their employees, customers and the public safe at all times, especially during winter blasts. Even though recyclables and garbage were piling up last month, Robinson preferred that her crew and other drivers be protected.

"The trucks weigh 60,000 lbs. when they are full and they maneuver terrible in the snow," she said.

Waste Management is exploring ideas to help residents get their garbage out even if the trucks can't get in.

"We are working on prearranged drop-off locations, where you can take your garbage to our trucks if you are able to make it out," said Robinson. Council members agreed that this would be a great idea to have in place for next winter.

Robinson urged customers to visit the company's Web site for updates on weather conditions and the status of their pickups during holidays and severe weather circumstances.

"We received 9,000 calls in one day during the storm. Our Web site is a useful tool for people to use rather than calling in, which has high wait times," she said. Not only does the site (www.wmnorthwest.com) provide customers with important current information, it is also an educational source as well, with tips for reducing waste and recycling more.
