Snohomish County Democrats will gather to celebrate the inauguration of Barack Obama as 44th President of the United States of America on January 20 at a breakfast event that is open to the public.
The swearing-in ceremony and the new president's Inaugural Address will be televised at the ticketed gathering at the Cedarcrest Restaurant and Grill, located at the Cedarcrest Golf Course on 84th Street NE between Highway 9 and 67th Avenue NE in Marysville.
Inauguration activities and entertainment begin at 10 a.m. (Eastern time) and last approximately two hours. The local breakfast buffet opens at 7 a.m., just as the United States Marine Corps band kicks off the Washington, D.C., festivities.
Attendees will also get a chance to meet the new volunteer leaders of the county's Democratic Party organization, most of whom were elected in December to two-year terms.
Bill Phillips of Marysville is the party's new county Chairman. He served previously as second vice-chair for the county among other volunteer posts, and has worked for Congressman Rick Larsen for the past six years.
"I became politically active in the late 1980s in Louisiana, where I worked on the Dukakis campaign," said Phillips. "I don't remember how that one turned out," he added with a quiet laugh.
"The 2008 election cycle was amazing in so many ways," said Phillips. "Before then, in my home district (the 39th), we were fortunate to have five or six people at meetings. Now we regularly see at least 30 people show up. It's an energizing experience."
The county chairman will support the election of Democrats to legislative positions, provide party leadership in establishing a plan and agenda for Snohomish County, and encourage political volunteerism. Even though the big election is over, there's work to do in the near future.
"Our next big challenge is to re-elect Dave Somers and Dave Gossett to the County Council," Phillips explained. "The results of this year's local elections really impact our lives, because that's where the decisions are made that affect us everyday."
Tickets to the inauguration celebration are $15 per person. Visit www.brownpapertickets.com for tickets, event details and map.
