Stuart Chernis, publisher of the Marysville Globe and Arlington Times, announced last week the closure of the newspapers' Arlington office. Staff of the Arlington Times will be relocated into the new offices of the Marysville Globe at 1085 Cedar Avenue.
The Times' editor, Sarah Arney, will continue to cover Arlington's news, as well as arts and entertainment events, and the paper's weekly publication schedule will not change. Reporter Kirk Boxleitner has been reassigned to the Globe's news desk following the departure of Tom Corrigan.
Chernis cited the economic downturn as one of the reasons behind the office closure. Many local businesses are searching for ways to cut costs while they await the return of a more normal revenue forecast.
The local papers were sold earlier this year to Sound Publishing, Inc., the largest publisher of community and suburban newspapers in Washington. The company operates 30 newspapers, two monthly business journals, and 18 weekly shoppers throughout Washington and Oregon.
The Arlington Times, according to the paper's Web site, is the oldest continuously published newspaper in the state of Washington. It was founded in 1888 as the Haller City News.
