Marysville breaks ground on new high school

Getchell HS CommonsSchool district and city officials welcomed the public on Saturday, May 17, for the groundbreaking ceremony at the planned campus for Marysville Getchell High School.

Superintendent Dr. Larry Nyland joined Mayor Dennis Kendall and planning principal Tracy Suchan Toothaker, along with School Board members, to the official start of the district’s latest construction project.

The new high school, designed by DLR Architectural Group, will meet high standards for environmental sensitivity. The overall site concept is designed to respect and preserve the natural setting and character of the property and buildings are strategically placed to minimize impacts to existing mature trees and wetlands.

Getchell HS groundsThe school, located at 8301-84th St. NE, will house approximately 1,600 students in four Smaller Learning Communities (SLCs) upon completion. A shared building will provide administration, physical education, cafeteria and other services.

Dr. Nyland explained that the school’s design will reflect the district’s five guiding principles: relationships at the center, focused learning, identity-purpose, community and accountability.

Funding for the project was provided by a bond that was approved by voters in February 2006. $79 million in bond money has been dedicated to the high school, with an expected $16 million from the state in matching funds.

The planned occupancy date is late 2010.
