Local restaurants earn food safety awards

Out of more than 3,000 food service businesses in Snohomish County, six were selected to receive Excellence Awards from the Snohomish Health District at a ceremony February 12.

Two of the establishments being recognized for outstanding food safety practices are located in north Snohomish County.

In the full-menu category, Bistro San Martin, located at 231 N. Olympic Avenue in Arlington, tops the list. That Burger Place, at 9414 State Ave. #B in Marysville, earned an award in the fast service category.

A 24-member food advisory committee considered 29 food service establishments nominated by Snohomish Health District sanitarians to determine the award recipients. The committee includes food industry owners, operators and chefs.

“We have a lot of restaurants who do things right, and the leaders in safe food practices deserve recognition,” said Rick Zahalka, manager of the Food and Living Environment Section of the Health District. “In addition to contributing to the overall health of the community, food safety pays dividends in food freshness and overall quality,” he continued.

The number of Snohomish County food service businesses grew from 2,600 in 2002 to 3,250 in 2007, an increase of 20 percent in five years.

Other food safety award winners are:

  • Limited Menu: L’Artisan French Bakery Café, 11419-19th Ave. SE #B-103, Everett
  • Grocery Store: Granite Falls Red Apple Market, 115 N. Granite Ave., Granite Falls
  • School/Industry/Institution: Northshore School District Fernwood Elementary, 3933 Jewell Rd., Bothell
  • Temporary Food Establishment: Nile Temple Drum and Bugle Corps, Evergreen State Fair
