Marysville police force grows to serve community

Marysville Police Chief Rick Smith has begun restructuring the local law enforcement department to increase accountability and prepare for anticipated community growth in the coming years.

Lt. Jeff Goldman being sworn in by Mayor Dennis KendallSergeant Jeff Goldman, an 18-year veteran of the force, was elevated to the rank of Lieutenant on December 11, 2007.

“Goldman will be a valuable mid-management player supporting the Operations Commander,” Smith said.

Also in December, Officers Larry Buell and Brad Akau, with 11 and 13 years on the force respectively, were sworn in as new Patrol Sergeants, and Custody Officer James Strickland, with nearly five years tenure in the Municipal Jail, was promoted to Custody Sergeant.

At a January 2 ceremony, 17-year veteran Sergeant Darin Rasmussen was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. Rasmussen will oversee and develop a Professional Standards Unit, oversee internal affairs, and coordinate the department’s accreditation. His longtime colleague, Mark Thomas, a member of the county Narcotics Task Force representing Marysville and 16-year veteran of the force, was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.

Chief Smith commended the advancing officers for their service and unique skills, saying “When I came to Marysville about nine months ago, I said how excited I was to be here. I am even more excited now about where our department and city are headed. Annexation and growth are going to open up more opportunities for promotion within the department.”

In 2007 the Marysville Police Department consisted of 45 sworn police officers, two community service officers, 11 custody officers and support staff, with an operating budget of $9.8 million.
