Schools will be closed Monday, Jan. 16, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but the YMCA is urging teens to make the holiday a day on, not a day off.
"Join other teens from Snohomish County to make 2012 our biggest Day of Service yet," urged Liane Hai, teen director at the Marysville Family YMCA. "Earn 4 hours of community service credit, a free lunch, a free limited edition MLK Day t-shirt, and of course, the warm fuzzy feeling from assisting a senior citizen in your community who needs your help."
Snohomish County's MLK Day of Service is a partnership between the YMCA, CCS Volunteer Chore Services, SeniorCorps, and Youth United/United Way of Snohomish County.
Last year, hundreds of Snohomish County teenagers gathered to perform good deeds in their community. Hai hopes to build on that turnout, with projects planned that range from landscaping and home repairs to reading with kids.
