Kristen Crakes and her family moved to Arlington from Oregon about a year ago, and in her search for a local beach for family outings, she discovered Blue Stilly Park and the Big Rock area along the Stillaguamish River.
Unfortunately, she also discovered an area filled with filth and litter.
"I was disgusted by the conditions of this park," said Crakes, "and I decided to organize a cleanup party for others who wanted to take an active interest in their local parks."
The Big Rock cleanup is slated for Saturday, August 22, with 3-hour shifts available between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
"I hope people with come and join other volunteers to help clean up the river access area, river rocks and remove garbage left by others," said Crakes.
Arlington Hardware is donating trash bags for the effort, and Garden Treasures will supply the disposable gloves. The Snohomish County Department of Fish and Wildlife will pick up garbage bags for disposal.
Blue Stilly Park is past the baseball field behind Strotz's Country Feed store. From exit 208, turn left at 27th and follow the road until it ends. For more information, call Crakes at (360) 548-3210 or e-mail starrysea@msn.com.
