The five-month "Be a Loser" contest wrapped up on Friday, June 18, with 38 teams still participating in the community weight loss challenge. After the final weigh-in, the overall contest winner was The Losers, a team of five women associated with Arlington Massage Therapy and Wellness.

More than 80 team members attended a celebration dinner held June 21 at Pacific Rim Supper Club.

The evening started with entertainment by Jeremy Randall, a local country singer who performs with the Hometown Band at the monthly Hometown Hootenanny. Door prizes were awarded throughout the night, courtesy of North County Outlook advertisers and supporters.

Fifteen teams posted losses of more than 100 pounds over the course of the contest. Altogether, over 3,161 pounds were shed by the contestants.

The Losers won the contest with a total weight loss of 12.84 percent-149.5 pounds for the five women.

Coming in a very close second was the friends and family team, The Fat and the Furious, headed by Rick Pederson. That team posted a 12.82 percent loss, with a total of 163 pounds dropped.

The third place finisher was Team Choose to Lose, which reported 138.5 pounds lost for a total of 12.07 percent.

Many participants shared stories about the contest's impact on their lives and their friendships, and several teams vowed to continue their efforts beyond the end of the "Be a Loser" challenge. Thanks to the success of the contest, members of the Eagle Mommas have signed up to play powderpuff football, and Ravi of the Gut Busters team is entering a bodybuilding contest.

Congratulations to all the losers! You're all winners in our eyes!
