The teams competing in the "Be a Loser" contest reported results from the first month's activity on Friday, February 19. We're excited to share that every team showed a loss in total team weight!
Some of the teams are off to a blazing start. Burnin' the Spare Tire, the team from Roy Robinson Chevrolet Subaru, lost an amazing 79.2 pounds (5.1 percent). A friends and family group, The Fat and the Furious, managed to shed 74.25 pounds (4.5 percent). Most teams, like ours here at North County Outlook, counted losses of 20 pounds or so.
The winning team for the first month is Team Fanny's from Fanny's Restaurant, who posted a loss of 73.2 pounds. Based on their beginning weight, that equals a total weight loss of 5.37 percent. Congratulations!

Team Tips
I have encouraged everyone if they "bite it, write it," meaning, let's all look at how many calories we're eating. We are also all trying to stay active. Three of us are working out with the Wii Fit. I must say this works great. It keeps track of all calories burned. Another team member joined a 24-hour gym. He works nights and this is working great for him. Then we have another team member who is doing great just by making healthier choices and parking at the far side of campus (he's in college) and not taking shortcuts when walking to class. I believe every little bit helps.
Saundra JohnsonChoose to LoseThis has been such a wonderful challenge to be a part of. All members of our team had great success this past month. Each team member has become more active and is more conscientious of what they eat. So far we have three team members who have decided to participate in a triathlon this summer. It will be a first for all of us. To prepare for this, we have been swimming, riding our bikes and going to the gym.
I have been focusing on "feeding my body, not my mouth." There are many tasty foods that my mouth would enjoy, but my body just doesn't need them. I have drastically changed my diet by eliminating pop and fast food. I drink approx. 3 liters of water a day. But I don't deprive myself of treats.; if I am craving something, I have a nibble to satisfy my taste buds. As a nation we have become so out of touch with what a serving size really is. When I have meals, I eat true serving sizes. What a difference this has made!
Lisa RobinetteThe Gut BustersOur team members are executing different methods of getting healthy. We have one member doing Weight Watchers, one doing the Zone Diet, and a few members are limiting themselves to 1200 calories per day. We each have different methods of exercise as well. While our methods vary, we all check in weekly to report an at-home weight. I keep a spreadsheet showing individual and team results including pounds lost and percentages of weight lost, both weekly and overall.
A strong support system, I think, is the best strategy for success. The best tool we have as a team is our Facebook page. We have a private group page on Facebook that we can check in as often as we wish. We've included our "Before" picture and pictures of our successes. The page contains many discussion boards for our every need.
· Weekly Stats/Success Stories boards
· "Brag Board" for those "Yea, Me" moments
· "Check in/Accountability" board for those of us who need a place to check in on daily goals (i.e. exercise)
· "Food Glorious Food!" board for sharing recipes.
· "Diet/Exercise humor" board to share all those funny anecdotes that we all encounter.
· "Frustration/Vents" board to just get those grumpy moments out of our system. This is a no-judgment zone.
Losing weight on our own has been a challenge for each of us; hence the condition of us being overweight. This competition has brought us all together to work toward a common goal: getting healthy. With our weekly at-home weigh-ins, charts and Facebook page, we've embraced the team mentality of getting healthy. It sure makes it easier to refuse the diet-killing foods (i.e. 1000 calorie Blizzard) with the mentality that we're not just eating that "killer," our whole team is eating it! Being in contact with one another, cheering for each other in our individual successes and soothing each other's rough days are the key to our success. We have constructed quite a support system for ourselves. As a result, our losses are gaining!
Lissa ProuseThe DownsizersMost of us are upping our exercise and learning that veggies are not the enemy. With our first weigh-in behind us, we have learned that we can do this and are going to do this for ourselves and each other. Most of us are doing the low carb/high protein and veggies and that seems to be working. Our workout has been Leslie's "walk at home" video ($10 at Walmart or Target). You can walk one mile, 2, 3, 4, or 5. For someone who isn't able to do a lot of cardio, this video rocks. We have also been doing the Wii Fit, which puts a fun spin on working out. Our slogan is get up and get moving. We also have competitions among ourselves, where we each put in $5 dollars and the person with the most weight lost at weigh-in wins the money to do something nice for themselves. Mostly this has been a pretty great first month in learning to read our bodies and know when we are hungry and when we are eating emotionally. I wish everyone continued success.
