Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: what are you doing for others?"
Each year, the Corporation for National and Community Service honors Dr. King's legacy by asking Americans to make the King holiday a national day of service.
January 18, 2010 is rapidly approaching and it's time to get involved and take up Dr. King's call to action.
Teens aged 14 to 18 who are looking to volunteer on Martin Luther King Day can gather with more than 100 friends and classmates at the Everett Family YMCA January 18 to kick off a local day of service.
Volunteer Chore Services and Retired Senior Volunteer Corps, in collaboration with the United Way of Snohomish County Youth United Program and the YMCA of Snohomish County Minority Achievers Program, are working together to celebrate Dr. King's legacy by turning community concerns into community action.
Students will be divided into groups of up to five people and each group will be assigned an adult volunteer to serve as a mentor, co-worker and supervisor. The groups will be helping clients of Volunteer Chore Services, a program that supports low-income seniors who need some type of help with everyday household chores. Tasks may include dishwashing, laundry, washing windows, cleaning bathrooms, sweeping floors, mowing lawns, trimming bushes and weeding.
