Folks hankering to see a parade in our corner of Snohomish County this Christmas season can get their fill of marching bands and holiday cheer in formation during Arlington's Hometown Holidays celebration December 5. The Merrysville for the Holidays Electric Light Parade, which normally coincides with Marysville's annual celebration, has been cut this year due to budget reductions.

Both cities, however, plan plenty of festive events for the whole family all day Saturday, December 5. Most of Arlington's happenings take place during the day, with the Santa Parade set to begin its trek down Olympic Avenue at noon. Throughout the day, families can enjoy horse-drawn buggy rides, shopping in the quaint downtown stores and strolling carolers. The tree lighting at Legion Park and visits with Santa are scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m.

Meanwhile, Marysville-sorry, Merrysville-takes over Comeford Park at 514 Delta Avenue from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday evening. An arts and crafts bazaar at the senior center also offers opportunities for photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus (bring your own camera) or with six specially-constructed holiday display scenes set up around the park. Refreshments, both free and for sale, will be available during the evening, courtesy of Merrill Gardens, Vinaccio Coffee and the Marysville Kiwanis Club.

At 7 p.m., Mayor Dennis Kendall and other city leaders will officiate at the ceremonial lighting of the Comeford Park water tower, followed by free Celtic holiday music performed live by A Well Known Stranger.

Bring non-perishable food items and new, unwrapped gifts for donation to Operation Marysville Community Christmas, to be distributed to families in need prior to Christmas.

Earlier in the day, experience the holiday spirit in downtown Marysville along historic Third Street as it becomes "The Street of Carols," thanks to special window displays commissioned by the family-owned stores.

"Shops will have windows featuring holiday carols for the stroller to guess at the title song," explained Mary Burns of The BookWORKS. "We invited local artist Gene Cyrus to produce a painting featuring the themed carol for the bookstore. It's featured in the window, along with the Christmas tree and the quartz pieces around it."

The downtown shops will offer treats, specials, music, carolers and friendly smiles to help visitors choose a special gift or just have an enjoyable time before the Merrysville celebration.
