When the Arlington Arts Council developed a promotional project, "Some Things Fishy in Arlington," local residents and businesses took the bait.

Over the past few months, over 360 plywood fish cutouts were purchased and decorated, more than three times the goal set by the local arts organization. On Saturday, October 24, dozens of volunteers showed up at a rain-drenched Island Crossing field to install the art project along I-5.

The community project, a reference to the many fish-related art displays in Arlington, was designed to entice drivers heading to the Vancouver Winter Olympics to take a detour into Arlington.

Jean Olson, chair of the project for the Arts Council, noted that some artists were reluctant to give up their creations for the freeway installation. As a result, beautifully decorated fish can also be seen throughout town, along the highways and local streets.

"Each fish is truly unique," said Sarah Arney, Arts Council president. "The people of Arlington really went all-out to support the project and help promote our community."

You might say they were caught up in the fun--hook, line and sinker.
