The Arlington Education Foundation's inaugural "Passport to Washington Wines" fundraiser, held September 24, was an evening filled with surprises for the palate and benefits for public schools. The wine-tasting event, attended by about 80 guests, raised over $12,000.

Held at the beautifully restored Magnolia Hall building in Arlington, Passport featured wines poured by five local wineries: Willis Hall from Marysville, Lantz Cellars from Everett, Coyote Canyon from Prosser, Samson Estates from Everson, and Carpenter Creek from Mount Vernon. Appétit Catering prepared a menu of paired tastes for each winery featured at Passport.

A selection of wine-related trips and baskets were donated by The Fischer House, Walla Walla; Fine Gifts by Arlington Pharmacy; Keith & Mary Kesselring; Virginia Collins & Bucky Tart; Karen Varnell; Coyote Canyon Winery; and Samson Estates Winery. The evening ended with the presentation of a magnificent pear-shaped diamond (5/8 ct) to one lucky guest, Jim Weiss.

Event sponsors included Sierra Property Management, Magnolia Hall, DBR Gemstone, Arlington Family Chiropractic, Eagle Family Dental, Jim Minifie/State Farm Insurance, Dr. Craig & Margaret Hedlund of Hedlund Chiropractic, Advanced Orthopaedic Institute, Dr. John & Kelly Dykstra, Penway Printing & Design, and Jason Schonaerts.

"We're thrilled with the success of this year's inaugural Passport event," said Cindy Huleatt, president of the Arlington Education Foundation. "Thank you to everyone who joined us for this spectacular evening. All funds raised from Passport will go directly towards supporting the AEF's three selected Pay It Forward projects for 2009."

The Arlington Education Foundation (AEF) was established in 2002. At the time the Arlington School District was building a new high school and was unable to completely fund a Performing Arts Center (PAC) on the campus. Motivated members of the community formed the AEF to raise $2.5 million to match the $2 million spent by the Arlington School District constructing the shell of the PAC. Currently the AEF raises, manages, invests and disburses funds for the enhancement of programs and projects within Arlington Public Schools.
