Denise BrownOctober is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the campaign against domestic abuse will be the focus of the 4th annual Hope Within luncheon, hosted by Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County, set for September 30 at the Everett Events Center. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. and the program takes place from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Denise Brown, the sister of Nicole Brown Simpson, is this year's guest speaker. Since 1995 Brown has worked to raise awareness and educate our communities on domestic violence by speaking and supporting women's shelters, schools, hospitals, prisons and corporate venues across the country. She has been a vocal proponent of legislative solutions for domestic violence, and she lobbied effectively on behalf of the Violence Against Women Act.

Domestic Violence Services, formerly the Center for Battered Women, is dedicated to ending domestic abuse in Snohomish County by providing a wide range of services to victims and by facilitating social change. DVS provides a 24-hour hotline that answers over 5,800 calls each year, offers emergency shelter to more than 300 women and children and transitional housing for 20 families, and provides support and advocacy services.

The cost to attend the fundraising luncheon is $10 per person or $100 for a table of ten. For information, to become a table host or reserve a seat, call Julie Martin at (425) 259-2827 ext. 13, or e-mail Julie@dvs-snoco.org.
