Thousands of children and their families enjoyed the festival atmosphere of the eighth annual Summer Jubilee, held August 8 at the Tulalip Amphitheatre, and left the free event with school supplies, a new haircut and smiles on their faces.
Fifteen area churches and evangelical organizations worked together to fund and organize the event. In years past the one-day festival has drawn as many as 15,000 people. With a dip in contributions, organizers put together school supply kits for 5,000 children this year.
Maegan Halstead and her cousin Monica Halstead stopped into the face painting booth to have colorful designs applied by festival volunteers. Maegan, who is from Arlington, opted for a flower while Monica sported a watermelon design.
"This is fun," said Maegan. "There's lots to do and it's all free."
The amphitheatre was divided into an area for big inflatables and a rock wall, a barbecue station serving hot dogs and bottled water, a covered pavilion where volunteers offered haircuts, a stage for the day's entertainment, and the popular school supply pickup line.
One of the big hits of the day was the wild animal exhibit and show put on by Predators of the Heart. Wolves, cougars, alligators and giant snapping turtles were displayed on stage while the audience gasped for the handlers' safety. The event began with an all-city church service, and other entertainment included Root Down Sound, SJ Hip-Hop Dance and Reflections Dance Company.
Katelynn and Taylor Upthegrove from Arlington grinned as two stylists worked on their back-to-school hairdos.
"I found out about the Jubilee yesterday at the food bank," said the girls' mom. "It's a great event, and it fills a very big need in the community."
