Fourteen area church groups will give away free school supplies and provide haircuts, lunch and activities to local families at the annual Summer Jubilee, planned for August 8 at the Tulalip Amphitheatre.

"The need is greater than ever," said Turning Point pastor Mike Villamor. "Last year we saw more than 12,000 community members at our event, and we're expecting as many as 20,000 this year."

Held the past few years at Asbery Field, the Summer Jubilee is a free event that is open to the entire community. In addition to school supply giveaways, kids can get free back-to-school haircuts and families can enjoy live entertainment, free hot dogs and kids' activities.

Fundraising for this year's event has been more difficult than in years past, Villamor added, but the churches are committed to the outreach.

"There's no more important time than now for the church community to step up to help," he said.

The Tulalip Tribes have donated use of the amphitheatre, and Walmart furnishes thousands of dollars in school supplies at cost as well as helping to underwrite the event.

"We need $25,000 to $30,000 to fully fund the jubilee," said Villamor. "We're not quite there yet. We want to make sure all our kids go back to school with the supplies they need, so help from the community would be greatly appreciated."

The event began eleven years ago when Villamor and his wife handed out school supplies to 50 kids in the church basement.

"We filled their whole school supply list back then," the pastor said. "We're not able to do that anymore, but the kids get a lot of their basic supply needs covered at the jubilee." Each child receives about $20 in school supplies at the event.
