Tara MizellParks and Recreation services manager Tara Mizell has been named the City of Marysville's Employee of the Month for June for her commitment and contributions to the growth of the city's Parks and Recreation Department and her extensive community service.

Mayor Dennis Kendall presented her with the award at the June 22 City Council meeting. The surprise honor coincided with the presentation of a service award plaque for 15 years with the city, while co-workers and family witnessed the accolades Mizell received.

Mizell manages four divisions: Recreation Services, Athletic Services, Senior Services and Administrative Operations. As a result of her organizational values and culture, Parks Director Jim Ballew reported that the department accomplished noteworthy achievements and has been recognized by other agencies as a model for cities of a comparable size.

Mizell single-handedly took on the development of informational services in the department and is now "the only employee who can carry on a conversation with the city's Information Services team," joked Ballew. The department is beginning the installation of an online registration system to benefit patrons and save the city considerable resources and funds.

Mizell represents the department as a member of the Employee Appreciation and Recognition Committee, and has been an integral contributor to the success of the program. She has trained and worked with hundreds of young volunteers and employees interested in serving their community in public service. Mizell designed one of the best employee orientation models used in the field and, as a result, the city's risk management system has benefitted greatly while the department's patrons are assured that they are working with a professional staff at all levels.

Mizell is a certified Park and Recreational Professional (CPRP) and she recently concluded two terms as Secretary-Treasurer of the Washington Parks and Recreation Association. She has been actively involved within the countywide human services system, working with the Children's Network, Community Coalition and Kids Matter Program.

Mizell was recognized by the Lakewood School District superintendent as a Volunteer of the Year recipient in 2008 for her commitment to the Lakewood Boosters Club. She also volunteers with Operation Marysville Community Christmas project each holiday season.

Mizell and her husband Jim, a Marysville Fire District firefighter, have two daughters, Peyton and Kaylee, who attend Lakewood High School.

"The Mizell family has an extraordinary dedication to their community and service to its residents and visitors," Kendall said. "Those who work with Tara each day understand this foundation and often follow her lead."
