Organizations in Snohomish County with a focus on heritage projects are encouraged to apply for a Community Heritage Grant through the Snohomish County Historic Preservation Commission (SCHPC). Spearheaded by current county councilmember Brian Sullivan while serving in the state legislature, the program uses funds designated from document recording fees to promote historical preservation.

"This county is brimming with a profound and rich history," Sullivan said, "and accepting applications that support the preservation of our history is a valuable tool for our county."

Non-profit and for-profit entities with projects that have a clear heritage focus relating to the county are urged to apply. The project application should demonstrate increased public access to local history and provide a clearly defined product.

The estimated SCHPC allocation for 2009 is $45,000, with individual grants ranging from $1,000 to $25,000. The application process will be conducted on an annual basis. Project sponsors selected for funding will be required to match the county's funds dollar-for-dollar.

"Snohomish County citizens can be assured 100 percent of these [designated] funds will go towards historic preservation," Sullivan said. "This is a longstanding priority for me."

The application deadline for the Community Heritage Program is August 10, 2009. For a complete application and program guidelines, visit www1.co.snohomish.wa.us and search 'Community Heritage Program.'
