Until four years ago, Julie Draper was a typical Marysville mom, busy keeping up with her two sons and managing her family. A viral infection in 2005 changed all that, as the virus settled in Draper's heart and damaged the muscle "beyond repair."
Suddenly, the 43-year-old woman found herself unable to do the simplest chores or even walk without pain and breathing difficulty.
A battery of tests revealed the damage, and in 2006 she underwent surgery to install a pacemaker as a temporary fix.
"My heart will never get better," Draper said, "so now I'm waiting for a transplant."
Like many Americans these days, Draper's insurance is woefully inadequate. Out of the estimated $750,000 cost (if all goes well), she has coverage for only $250,000.
"My mom practically lives at Fanny's (Restaurant), and the girls there decided they were going to do something to help, which is so wonderful," said the Marysville woman.
On Thursday, June 11, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Fanny's is hosting a silent auction, bake sale and casual dinner as a fundraiser for Draper. The event will also feature a "Donate Life Today" table, so attendees can learn more about organ transplants. Fanny's is located at 505 Cedar Street in Marysville.
The local restaurant has pledged a $1,000 contribution in Draper's name, in addition to the proceeds from the June 11 event.
"Kay (Julie's mom) handed us a flyer with a handwritten note that read 'Please help me save the life of my daughter'," said Cindy Brown, the restaurant's co-owner. "How could we not step up and do something?"
Draper is hesitant to ask for help, and seemed slightly embarrassed by the efforts on her behalf. The young mother realizes, however, that this is a problem she can't solve on her own.
To make Draper's life even more stressful, her 20-year-old son, Sean, will be deployed to Afghanistan for military service this month.
"I hope we get a good turnout for the auction and dinner," said Brown, "but people are also welcome to just drop by and make a donation at the restaurant."
Donations can also be made to the Julie Draper Benevolent Fund at any WaMu/Chase Bank.
"We would be very grateful for any monetary gifts you could share, and for all prayers on Julie's behalf," wrote Kay.
