Like all community service organizations, Lions Clubs provide service locally. But in 1925 the national Lions Club organization accepted a challenge from Helen Keller to become "Knights of the Blind and Hearing-Impaired," and in the decades since then, members have consistently contributed to the eradication of preventable and reversible blindness.
That contribution may come in the form of a $38,000 service dog for a local blind student, or a hearing aid that allows an Everett grandmother to enjoy the songs of birds once again, or free vision and hearing tests for thousands of Washington state school children.

May is Lions Sight and Hearing Month, a time set aside to recognize the work done by Lions Club members around the world and locally. That work has been mobilized by more than $200 million in donations from clubs around the world.
Local Lions' projects include creation and maintenance of the world's most successful Eye Bank, located in Seattle, which processed donated corneal tissue for over 3,000 corneal transplants last year alone. Everett Lions stage an annual Fishing Derby for the Blind, held each September since 1944, and local clubs sponsor Camp Leo, an outdoor recreation and education summer camp near Shelton for diabetic children. Lions Club members also provide funding for a mobile health screening van which visits every corner of Washington, providing free vision and hearing screening plus diabetic and blood pressure testing for thousands of adults and children every year.
Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service club with over 1.3 million members in 205 countries and more than 45,000 clubs. The Marysville Lions Club meets the first and Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Village Restaurant. Arlington Lions meet the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month at 6:30 p.m. in Hadley Hall at the Boys & Girls Club. The newest club in our area, the Tulalip Lions Club, meets the second and fourth Wednesdays at noon at the Tulalip Casino Cabaret.
