It's time to shake off the cobwebs of the winter and learn about incorporating healthier decisions into everyday lives. Join organizers for the first-ever Healthy Communities Challenge Day, along with Get Movin', on Saturday, June 6, from 1 to 7 p.m. at the Marysville YMCA and Allen Creek Elementary on the corner of 4th Street and 60th Dr. NE.

The City of Marysville adopted the Healthy Communities program about a year ago, and its organizational team has been busy since then, designing programs and building support. June 6 is the official community kickoff day for the program, which is aimed at fostering better health by providing more opportunities for citizens to be active, be educated and be involved.

The program is a community-level response to combat the obesity epidemic in the community, and the chronic diseases to which it contributes, such as diabetes, heart disease and stroke. These diseases are on the rise in Marysville, across the region and nationwide.

Get Movin' is an all-ages free summer program that encourages families to spend at least 30 minutes each day in a physical activity. Kids and adults can track their success and earn rewards each week.

The June 6 event will feature entertainment by Tim Noah, gardening tips and comedy from KING-TV's Ciscoe, a kids' art center, Hula Hoopfest Challenge, and lots of demonstrations, information and giveaways. Walk the Marysville Mile on the Jennings Loop, play a friendly game of badminton or volleyball, and enjoy a healthy dinner.
