An unexpected alliance has developed between local semi-pro football players and a non-profit agency that helps middle-class families in a temporary economic crisis.

Throughout the coming season, a portion of the proceeds from home games played by the Snohomish County Thunder will go to World of Hearts. In addition, the team is collecting non-perishable food items for local food banks.

Mike Haggett, owner and head coach of the Thunder, explained the connection. "We're not just a bunch of men playing football," he said. "We care about our community, and this is a great way to help give a little back to those in need."

World of Hearts founder Sadiqa Sakin is grateful for the opportunity for additional funding of her organization's mission.

"World of Hearts focuses on helping those who are experiencing an unexpected adverse situation. Whether it's a job loss or a sudden health crisis, we work to provide the resources that families need to once again become self-sufficient," said Sakin.

Operating on a shoestring budget itself, World of Hearts has helped dozens of local families pay their rent, make car payments and keep their lights turned on.

"We believe that if the basic needs are met, families can move forward with the confidence and conviction they need to resolve their problems and retain a sense of self-worth," Sakin explained.

With government budgets strained past the breaking point, private organizations like World of Hearts are getting more requests from families who would otherwise fall through the cracks.

The Snohomish County Thunder is part of the Cascade Football League, and Haggett also serves as president of the league. Locally, the team plays at Everett Memorial Stadium and at Monroe High School, but their games take them all over western Washington. Ticket prices are $10 per person, or $8 with a food donation.

The first home game of the season pits the Thunder against the South King County Colts on Saturday, April 25, at 6 p.m. at Everett Memorial Stadium. Gates will open at 5 p.m. for a pre-game hot dog cookout.

On May 2, the Thunder takes on the Seattle Stallions at Edmonds-Woodway High School, and the following Saturday, May 9, the team plays the Kitsap County Bears at Monroe High School.

Haggett, who owns Thunder Construction Company, encourages families to come to the games for good, clean fun. "Our games are definitely family-friendly," said the coach, "because the league doesn't allow bad behavior on or off the field."

To Sadiqa Sakin and those she strives to help, the football team's generous offer comes at a critical time.

"We get 12 to 15 calls a day looking for help," she said, "and it's really sad when you have to turn people away."
