While their cohorts are out fighting crime, some local police officers will be serving the public in a more literal way during the Tip-a-Cop event on Saturday, April 18, at the Lakewood Crossing Red Robin restaurant.

From noon to 8 p.m. law enforcement personnel will take orders and deliver meals to diners at the family-friendly establishment to raise money for Special Olympics.
2009 marks the second year that officers from the Marysville, Arlington and Lake Stevens police departments have been involved in the event at the Smokey Point Red Robin. However, the Marysville team has participated in Tip-a-Cop for the past eight years.
"We started at Everett's Red Robin," explained Patricia Duemmell, an evidence technician with the department, "and then we traveled north to Burlington. But now that Marysville has welcomed Red Robin here, we're excited to be able to work in our city and show our support of Special Olympics to our own community."
Participants from Marysville will include Chief Rick Smith, Judge Fred Gillings, support staff and even a few retired officers. At least five Arlington staff members will be on hand for the event.
"All 35 Red Robin restaurants in Washington State are involved," said Kristin Banfield, Arlington's assistant city administrator.
As we reported in the last issue of North County Outlook, the local Special Olympics program is in dire need of help from the community. Tip-a-Cop proceeds will help fill that gap.
