Firefighter/Paramedic Dan Schwartz of Marysville Fire District recently received the 2008 Washington Public Servant - Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Award, presented by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). This award recognizes EMTs who demonstrate a high level of excellence and commitment to ongoing education.

Schwartz began a teaching career at Marysville Middle School in 1990. The following year, Schwartz started as a part-time firefighter with the Marysville Fire District. He was hired full-time with the district in 1996.

Two years later, Schwartz attended the University of Washington/Harborview Medical Center's paramedic training program to become a certified emergency medical technician and cardiac life support specialist. Schwartz currently oversees the district's Multiple Casualty Incident (MCI) program and is serving as the Education Coordinator for the Snohomish County Emergency Medical Services Program.

In response to the award, Schwartz said, "The fact that I was nominated by my department and supervisors, feels really good. It makes it that much more meaningful knowing they respect what I do."

Schwartz was recognized at Marysville Fire District's Board of Directors February 25 meeting with his co-workers and family by his side. Schwartz had been previously honored at the Veterans of Foreign Wars' Department of Washington's Awards dinner in Spokane in January.

During the event, William Morse, commander of VFW Post 1561, said to Schwartz, "I am in awe of the work you do. You have my deepest respect and admiration. I am delighted to be honoring one of our own paramedics from the Marysville area."

Marysville Fire District currently has 20 paramedics on staff.
