Read More Communities
Steve and Pauline Smith, owners of Sunnyside Nursery, are taking the lead in backyard edible gardening to help the community eat healthier foods and save money. It all begins on March 21 at 11 a.m., with free lunch, door prizes and free blueberry bushes for the first 300 attendees.
The community event, focusing on 21st century gardening, will also feature representatives from local non-profit agencies.
Joyce Zeigen of the Marysville Community Food Bank will give away seeds and provide information on the vegetables needed by food bank clients. Doug Buell will represent Marysville's Healthy Communities program, and several Master Gardeners will be on hand to discuss the Growing Groceries program.
Representatives of Western Washington Fruit Tree Research will talk about growing fruit trees west of the Cascades, and Marysville-Pilchuck High School students will discuss their efforts to raise food for the food bank.
Vendors will also be on hand to provide additional 'know-how' in growing your own foods, including Cascade Sales, manufacturer of The Worm Factory; The 'Earth Box', a self-contained planting system; EB Stone Co., with organic fertilizers and compost.
To add some fun and whimsy, a number of local artisans will be on hand from the Pacific NW Artisans Co-op, demonstrating fiber art, wearables, mixed media art, pottery, soaps, lotions, artisan foodstuffs and more.
Come on out to Sunnyside Nursery, 3915 Sunnyside Blvd. in Marysville, for a full day of helpful information, and even a free hot dog lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, visit www.sunnysidenursery.net or phone (425) 334-2002.
