Don Burrows has years of experience in job recruitment and outplacement, and he wants to share some of his insights with local residents who are faced with today's challenging job market.
"I thought about all the worries and stress people are going through right now, and I asked myself, what can I do to help?" explained Burrows.
He decided to share his knowledge as a hiring "insider" to help job seekers be more successful. The most critical piece of the puzzle, Burrows determined, is a resumé that focuses on key accomplishments rather than job duties and responsibilities.
"Companies aren't hiring activities," said Burrows, "they're hiring results."
The free 90-minute seminars, which are sponsored in part by the Marysville Sunrise and Noon Rotary clubs, will help participants identify seven to ten work-related achievements and a handful of "motivated" skills that will form the centerpiece of their final accomplishments-based resumé. Five class dates are scheduled so far at Jennings Park Barn, beginning March 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. Other tentative dates are April 2, 7, 16 and 23.
"Most people are not aware of the value they can offer to a prospective employer," said Burrows. "By doing a few exercises, people will realize they've accomplished more than they give themselves credit for."
The class will include before and after resumé samples, along with worksheets and checklists for creating the ideal job hunt document.
"I hope to help people stand out in a stack of applicants," Burrows explained. "The trick is to become one in a million, not one of a million."
Registration is not required to attend the free workshop, but Burrows is asking participants to bring a non-perishable food item to be donated to the local food bank.
Burrows is also the author of "Plan While You Still Can," a book focused on end-of-life planning, published by Aviva Publishing of Lake Placid, New York.
