On March 7, 2009, members of the local Soroptimists will hold a community service event to celebrate International Women's Day-the second annual Hams for the Hungry food drive.
"Hunger in our community is a huge need," said Soroptimist member Renae James. "These are very tough economic times and with the increased use of the Marysville Food Bank, the need is greater then ever. Many families in our community are out of work and are now depending on the Marysville Food Bank."
The Marysville Safeway and the Allen Creek Thriftway stores will host the 2nd Annual Hams for the Hungry food drive Saturday, March 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Volunteers will be on hand to collect hams and food to donate to the Marysville Food Bank for the Easter holiday.
Last year's drive collected over 700 pounds of food and $729 in cash and gift certificate donations.
The local service club's past Days of Service have featured a variety of events such as a Community Baby Shower at which baby items were collected for the WIC program. Soroptimists also participated in Operation Community Back Pack, which collected personal items and clothing for children removed from drug houses, along with more than $5,000 in cash donations.
Soroptimist International of Marysville is a club of dedicated business and professional women who volunteer in their community. This year the local members are celebrating over 30 years of volunteer service to the community.
