Bob Rawe wants to offer folks the opportunity to get to know, and show their appreciation for, local veterans. The non-profit organization he founded, Take a Vet to Lunch, will sponsor its second community dinner on February 28 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Marysville Masonic Lodge, 419 Columbia Avenue.
The dinner is free for veterans and their spouses. Non-veterans' $15 tickets help subsidize the cost of the dinner and facility rental. Tickets are available in advance or at the door.
"We're honored to be involved with Bob and his efforts," said North County Outlook editor Beckye Randall. Randall is a table host volunteer, providing the dinnerware service for eight people, and is assisting with ticket sales.
"My husband is a Vietnam-era veteran," Randall continued, "and although he plays down his military service, like most vets do, those contributions should not be forgotten."
The community dinner, featuring an informal menu of pulled pork sandwiches, salads and desserts, recognizes the sacrifices made by veterans in all branches of the military and throughout the nation's history.
An honored attendee at the organization's dinner last September was 96-year-old Chauncey Christofferson, a veteran of World War II. Mike Gregoire, the state's First Gentleman and a Vietnam War veteran, also attended last fall's event and delivered a speech in honor of vets.
"This time we plan to allow more time for table talk among guests at each table," said Rawe, "although presentations will include live music, an inspirational slide show and a special commemorative flag-folding."
Rawe was recently presented with an American flag that draped the coffin of a World War I soldier. The historic flag, with stars that are hand-sewn rather than printed, will be on display at the dinner.
A raffle is also planned during the evening, with prizes donated by local businesses.
The Masonic Lodge has a capacity of 150 people, and Rawe hopes the crowd will be made up of an equal number of veterans and non-vets.
Peggy McKay plans to host several tables on behalf of Soldiers Angels, a national nonprofit organization that serves active duty and returning service members and their families. Other local volunteers include Sheila Frazier, Beth Glass, Ken Cage, Sally Brandenburger, Crystal Wilkerson, Autumn Payton, Margret Hopkins and Gayle Castillo.
