Who would have guessed that an all-night stroll could lead to major scientific breakthroughs?

The American Cancer Society's signature fundraising event, Relay for Life, has a 25-year history of providing resources for cancer research, patient services, advocacy and prevention education. North Snohomish County volunteers are gearing up for the relay's tenth year in our community.

In 2008, the local event raised more than $154,000, and organizers are hoping to top that figure this year.

Nancy LaMont, a cancer survivor and this year's publicity chair for the north Snohomish County Relay for Life, explained, "Whether cancer has touched your life or not, Relay for Life is for you. If you're a cancer survivor, we want to celebrate with you. If you have lost a loved one to cancer, or know someone who has, we want to remember them with you during our Luminaria Ceremony of Hope."

A kickoff celebration is planned for Thursday, January 29, at 6 p.m. at the Kellogg Marsh Grange in Marysville. The grange is located at the corner of 67th Avenue NE and 100th Street NE.

"The kickoff is where our community of families, caregivers, cancer survivors, schools and sponsors come together to have fun, meet others in the community, learn more about the Relay for Life, join or form teams, and snack on some great food," LaMont continued.

During the relay, team members take turns walking around the clock, fulfilling pledges made by sponsors. Entertainment, fun activities and camaraderie are all part of the festivities during the two-day event.

The 2009 Relay for Life will be held at Marysville-Pilchuck High School June 13 and 14. To learn more, visit www.relayforlife.org.
