Parents serving in the military may not be home for Christmas, but their children can feel a little closer thanks to an innovative program sponsored by the American Red Cross.
"Flat Daddies and Mommies" are life-size photos of Snohomish County military parents that can stand or be mounted, bringing the image of deployed moms and dads to vivid life for their children.
Bev Walker, director of the Snohomish County Red Cross chapter's Service to the Armed Forces Office, received a grant for the photo vouchers valued at $49.95 each. A limited number are available while they last by calling (425) 304-4476 Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or by sending an e-mail to WalkerB@snohomishcountyredcross.org.
"Experts believe the cutouts are a useful psychological device, especially for children, to help cope with the stress of long absences," said Walker. "It helps the family stay connected and is a constant reminder that, even though Mom or Dad might be thousands of miles away, they are still a party of their lives."
Families who receive a voucher for a free Flat Daddy or Flat Mommy will receive instructions on where to send photos for the enlargement process. Photos of loved ones will be processed into a waist-up, life-size image, 26 inches by 36 inches, and mounted on an adhesive backing. Orders for the Flat Daddy or Flat Mommy program must be placed by December 10 to be returned by Christmas.
