Soroptimists plan women's recognition awards
Marysville's Soroptimists, a volunteer organization for business and professional women working to improve the lives of women and girls, are taking applications for several important awards to be presented next year.
The Women's Opportunity Awards are cash grants given to women with primary financial responsibility for their families who are seeking to improve their economic status by gaining additional skills, training or education. These awards are not scholarships, but rather cash awards to offset costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education, including tuition, books, supplies, childcare or transportation costs.
The program starts on a local level with cash awards from $400 to $1000. Local winners are entered into regional and international competitions where the prize reaches $15,000.
The deadline to apply for the Women's Opportunity Award is December 15, 2008. If you are interested, or know someone who may qualify, please contact Rosie Reynaud at (360) 659-0960 for information.
Soroptimists' Making a Difference for Women Award honors a woman who has worked to improve the lives of women and girls through her professional or volunteer work. The deadline to apply or to nominate a woman who deserves recognition is December 1, 2008. Contact Sally Brandenburger at (425) 923-4828 for more information.
Young women between the ages of 14-17 who are engaged in volunteer activity within their community or schools are eligible to apply for the Violet Richardson Award. The organization for which she volunteers will receive $500 and the award winner also receives $500. Additional cash awards are available at the regional level.
The deadline for the Violet Richardson Award application is December 1, 2008. For more information or an application, call Renae James at (425) 971-0031.
