Maryfest gears up for 2009 festival

Pageant planned, officers elected

High school juniors and seniors from the Marysville and Lakewood school districts are invited to participate in the Marysville Strawberry Festival April Friesner Memorial Royalty Scholarship Pageant, slated to be held in March 2009. The contest is open to both girls and boys.

Three representatives will be chosen to fill the positions of the Royalty Court for Marysville's summer festival, which will have the theme of "Magical Fantasy" for 2009. The first place winner will receive a $3,000 scholarship, with the two runners-up each awarded $2,000 scholarships. The deadline for applications is November 30.

The Strawberry Festival Royalty represents Marysville in over 20 community festivals throughout the Northwest and Canada during their one-year reign. The local festival will be held June 19, 20 and 21, 2009.

Sixth-graders can also apply to be members of the Junior Royalty. Strawberry Festival juniors are invited to ride on the float during select parades along with their high school counterparts and have other opportunities to shine. Applications for Junior Royalty positions are due by January 31, 2009.

The Strawberry Festival committee recently elected officers for the 2009 Board of Directors. Bobbi Young will serve as the organization's president and Angie Miller is the new vice-president. Also elected as vice-presidents were Frank Michal and Linda Farrington. Rounding out the list of 2009 officers is Janet Cavalli as secretary and Nancy Bell, treasurer.

Volunteer positions are still open for the summer festival, and many committees are actively seeking new members. The Strawberry Festival Board meets the third Tuesday of each month, and visitors are always welcome. For more information, call (360) 659-7664 or visit www.maryfest.com.
