Taekwondo students compete in state tourney

An estimated 750 competitors and 1200 spectators from the state of Washington and surrounding areas attended the Washington State Open Championship Taekwondo tournament on Saturday, October 18, in Bellevue. More than 200 local competitors participated from U.S. Taekwondo Academy, which has locations in Marysville, Arlington, Stanwood, Mt. Vernon, Bellingham and Ferndale.
Poomse (forms) competitors showcased their skills through a set pattern of movements against imaginary attackers, demonstrating the beauty and art of Taekwondo. Sparring competitors participated in full contact sparring, demonstrating superior accuracy and impact power to legal scoring areas in order to win their division.
The head instructor for the Marysville location, Mr. T. Ekle, is a strong proponent of tournament participation by his students. “Tournament provides a great opportunity for ages 4 and up to not only improve their physical technique, but to increase self-esteem and self-confidence as the student performs under pressure. As instructors, it is our responsibility to make sure the students are well-prepared and will be successful at tournament.”
Taekwondo is a martial art composed of 80% kicking and 20% blocking and punching. It originated in Korea, and its history dates back over more than 2,000 years. One of the things that makes Taekwondo unique to other martial arts, is not only its emphasis on kicking techniques, but its emphasis on life education as well. The Head Instructor for the Arlington studio, Mr. Mulrine, said, “The really good studios are not only training physical technique, but have a system in place to help their students develop their character in their daily lives as well, traits such as Courtesy, Integrity, Self-Control, Perseverance, and Indomitable Spirit.
For kids, starting as young as age 4, it can go even further by making things like listening to their parents and doing their chores as part of the requirement for advancing in rank.”
