Marysville Council OKs dog park

A temporary off-leash dog park at Strawberry Fields in north Marysville was unanimously approved by the Marysville City Council at its July 14 meeting.

Construction on the facility will begin in August. It’s planned to open to the public in September.

Jim Ballew, the city’s parks and recreation director, recommended the site for an off-leash park after a previous location near Sunnyside Elementary School ran into resistance from neighbors.

Strawberry Fields currently consists of athletic fields and wide-open spaces. The off-leash area will occupy approximately three acres on the southeast corner of the property.

The Marysville Dog Owners Group, M-DOG, has pledged to help with clean-up and maintenance of the dog park. Funds raised at the recent Poochapalooza event will supplement the city’s $20,000 budget for the park’s construction, which will mostly be spent on fencing and a few structures.

Eventually, additional soccer fields could be created at the athletic complex, which might mean dogs and their owners would have to find a new place to roam off-leash. But for now, M-DOG members are all smiles.
