Katie BourgSenior Daze

by Katie Bourg

About Katie: Having arrived in time for the Great (?) Depression, WWII, and all other 20th century problems, I am endowed with long and varied memories. Writing classes have long been my home away from home. Other people's stories are fascinating, and sharing is growth at its best. Hope you seniors will join me with your stories. Try it. You'll like it.

Bigger TV is just a bigger nuisance

Here's to 2012

Coming through-

Elections many,

Qualified few.

In this day of

Smears and screams,

All appears on

Electronic screens.

Whatever you are

Or do or be

Is going to end up

Where all can see.

Forget about

Anonymity;

It's an exercise

In futility.

Having said that, it seems a little odd to be thinking of indulging myself and buying one of those big TVs, the kind that you bolt to the wall. They cost more than I should consider spending, but it would be nice to sit back on my living room couch to watch.

Then I started thinking. I don't spend much time with what I've got. Two favorite authors just released new books. The sun is showing up and my flower beds could use cleaning. There's the quilt I haven't finished. Another one I planned to start, two years ago. Different friends talk of lunch, while waiting for Stilly Singers to start singing again.

And there's another problem.

I don't think much of what I'm seeing now. I resist the thought that I might be getting old and crotchety, but I really don't care for what's available on the screen. Garments that display more anatomy than they cover irritate me. I'm still an old seamstress from way back. (Have designers forgotten what material is for?) And the over grown 'boys' that dance across the screen, leering at girls, snarling at suspects, or fighting witches do not impress me.

Politicians will saturate the screen this year. Why waste the money?

I'm busier than ever with things to do, old and new. Last week I was asked by Joan Bethel to be on her senior radio show on the fourth Monday at 6 p.m. on KFCR 90.7 FM. You might want to try listening on that 'little box' that's still on the shelf.

I'm trying to figure out how to get to the Hootenanny, since I don't drive after dark. A good neighbor mentioned wanting to see a current movie the other day. I used to be a chronic movie buff, when I had someone to share it with. Kitty and I enjoyed fish and chips, then crossed the street to see "The War Horse." It was well worth the price.

I already take in other attractions in the area, when I can. And daughter Betsy treated me to "The Nutcracker" over the holidays. I really don't have time for much else.

My favorite blouses are looking a little frayed. Think I should get back to the sewing machine.

With elections coming up there will be mudslinging. There are foot...basket...whatever ball games that will monopolize the tube. And S-E-X scandals that I'm too old to bother watching.

For what do I need another TV?

Happy new year!
