The importance of routines

We all know routines are important, and yet how many of us stop to ask why. Routines create a change reaction with many positive results.

For children, the world can be unpredictable and sometime chaotic. A routine gives children predictability and stability. This makes children feel secure, which causes them to feel more confident. Instead of children feeling anxious and communicating through inappropriate behaviors, they experience more success in their own lives.

Another positive benefit of routines is how they make transitions easier. Young children become so involved in what they are doing 'right now' that it is difficult for them to mentally switch gears and move on to a different activity. When they are on a routine and know what to expect, it is easier for them to switch those mental gears and go forward with less hassles.

A routine is independent of a schedule, which is more time-dependent, and it is more flexible than a schedule. However, a routine can help children and parents create schedules more easily.

As a closing thought, routines provide this same sense of predictability and calmness for our aging parents and our pets.

Crystal
