The weather has been good to us this far, which likely means your gym keys have been getting a lot less action since the sun has been out.

With all the outdoors activities available in our area, many are exchanging their normal fitness regimen for weekend hikes and bike rides. However, a weekend activity is not adequate for losing fat and toning up, and neither are those nightly strolls in the sun. If you're serious about changing your health and fitness, metabolism-boosting strength training needs to be included in your week. To create changes, you must regularly do weight training, cardio and eat clean.

I'm not here to steal your sunshine or put a halt on your summer fun. But if you want to keep making progress, you need consistent daily efforts to stay on track. Time spent in the gym can be reduced by taking cardio outdoors and doing something that keeps the heart rate elevated, but strength training needs to be maintained.

Try doing full body workouts a few times a week. This will cut gym time down to about three hours a week, or the equivalent of three TV shows. Time can be made for fitness if it's a priority.

Don't let summer barbecues and lounging on the beach rob you of a hard-earned physique. Stay motivated and focused with resistance training throughout the week. It's a minimal time investment that elicits big results. Cut gym time down to a few full body workouts each week and spend more time enjoying the outdoors, eat clean and you will have a beach body that lasts longer than the season.
